George Curry
George E. Curry is a journalist, keynote speaker, and media coach. He is a former Washington correspondent and New York Bureau Chief for the Chicago Tribune, editor-in-chief of Emerge magazine and editor of the National Newspaper Publishers Association News Service. He was also a reporter for Sports Illustrated and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Curry writes a weekly column for the NNPA and another, “Beyond the Spin,” for the Philadelphia Inquirer. While serving as editor of Emerge, Curry was elected president of the American Society of Magazine Editors; he was the first African American to hold the post. In 2000, the University of Missouri presented Curry with its Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism. The National Association of Black Journalists named him its 2003 "Journalist of the Year." Curry is the author of Jake Gaither: America's Most Famous Black Coach, editor of The Affirmative Action Debate and The Best of Emerge Magazine. Curry was editor of the National Urban League’s 2006 State of Black America report. He wrote and served as chief correspondent for the PBS documentary, Assault on Affirmative Action. Curry was also featured in the PBS documentary One Plus One and in the week-long Nightline special, America in Black and White.
