The Future of the Internet: Net Neutrality vs. Private Market Regulation

By Mary Alice Crim

The Intellectual Property & Entertainment Law Section (IPEL)of the Los Angeles County Bar Association will host a panel discussion about the impact of the FCC¹s August 1st Order in the Comcast/BitTorrent case, the Commission¹s authority to regulate Internet service providers, and liability rules resulting from the Order.

Speaker list and details are available here [1].

Discussion questions include: Will federal intervention or private market collaboration and self-regulation more effectively achieve Net Neutrality principles of fair and open access? How will Net Neutrality rules affect online anti-piracy efforts, access for independent content creators, use of Deep Packet Inspection technologies by Internet providers, etc.? Should Internet providers be able to sell multi-tiered access to heavy users (e.g., Google, Yahoo, peer-to-peer network users)?
