As part of its effort to gather information for the development of a National Broadband Plan, the FCC will hold a field hearing on December 5th in Memphis, Tenn., focusing on whether broadband services are being deployed in a way that allows all Americans to benefit. The public is encouraged to attend and participate. Additional information on the agenda will be announced shortly.

The Federal Trade Commission will hold two days of workshops free and open to the public, to explore how the Internet has affected journalism. The event is free and open to the public. The workshop will assemble representatives from print, online, broadcast and cable news organizations, academics, consumer advocates, bloggers, and other new media representatives.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 requires the FCC to submit a national broadband plan that seeks to “ensure that all people of the United States have access to broadband capability.” Specifically, the Commission is required to establish “a plan for use of broadband infrastructure and services in advancing … community development … worker training, private sector investment, entrepreneurial activity, job creation and economic growth…” What are the lessons from local and state government officials toward meeting these specific national purposes? What is the potential role of local officials representing un-served or under-served communities in the national broadband plan?
