Penn State Study Reveals Public Input Seemingly Meaningless to FCC’s Media Ownership Review Process

By: Jonathan Obar & Amit Schejter

A new study released by Penn State’s Institute for Information Policy criticizes the methods used by the FCC to organize their six public hearings on media ownership held throughout 2006-2007. Though the stated purpose of the hearings was to “fully involve” the public in a re-evaluation of the media ownership rules, Obar & Schejter argue that the FCC’s actions suggest that they had little interest in what the public had to say.

Momentum Builds for FCC Veto on Capitol Hill

The FCC Is in the Hot Seat

Last week, a bipartisan group of senators introduced a “resolution of disapproval” – a bill that would nullify the Federal Communications Commission’s decision to gut media ownership rules. The bill already has nearly 20 co-sponsors.

Yesterday, Reps. John Dingell (D-Mich.), Joe Barton (R-Texas), Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), and John Shimkus (R-Ill.) sent a letter to FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, stepping up their investigation of the agency’s ability to protect and manage the public’s airwaves.

The Clock is Ticking: 60 Days to Stop Media Consolidation

This morning Sen. Byron Dorgan introduced a bill in the Senate (SJ Res. 28) that would overturn the FCC’s disastrous December vote to gut media ownership rules. But there is a catch. The bill will expire unless it is passed in 60 legislative days.

So the clock is ticking – we have to act now to protect our communities from a massive new wave of media consolidation.

Take action now or read on to find out more about this important new bill.

The FCC’s Assault On Our Democracy

My friends, I am simply appalled by the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) decision yesterday to allow newspaper-broadcast cross-ownership in major media markets around the country. This egregious ruling, rammed through on a party line vote by FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, allows near unfettered consolidation of local media outlets by some of the largest corporations in America.

Kerry to Martin: We're Not Gonna Take It

It’s great to be back addressing you here at the Free Press online
community. You’ve all done a great job taking what used to be arcane
telecommunications policy and injecting a very healthy dose of
democratic activism into the mix.

As most of you probably already know, today is the day that Chairman
Kevin Martin has decided the FCC will vote to relax the newspaper radio
cross-ownership rule, which allow for greater concentration of
ownership over the local media outlets across the country. The proposed
rule is bad on the merits, and the process Martin has undertaken has
been nothing short of disgraceful. He has ignored the duties chartered
to the Commission, and he’s abrogated duties not chartered. He has
undertaken a rush to judgment without any particular justification,
choosing to ignore evidence that shows this rule change to be a step
down the wrong path.
