Donald Trump and Elon Musk are attacking First Amendment freedoms to avoid accountability. And they have a willing accomplice at the Federal Communications Commission: Chairman Brendan Carr, who has undermined free speech and press freedom as he carries out Trump’s promises of retribution for those who report critically on the administration.
This country was founded on the premise that our public sphere and our free press should be protected against government manipulation or retribution — including from the president and any “special government employees.”
Free speech isn’t reserved for certain viewpoints. Free speech isn’t meant to protect only the rich and powerful.
The First Amendment protects everyone’s freedom and free expression. And we must defend it.
