Once a month, we provide updates from the field as staffers work alongside our amazing allies and activists to create a more just and equitable media system.

  • News Voices Director Vanessa Maria Graber and News Voices Program Manager Alisha Wang Savson presented a community-mapping workshop to 28 editors who work at Gannett-owned newspapers from across the country. The workshop gave participants tools to use to engage BIPOC communities.
  • Vanessa Maria also spoke at WHYY’s Neighbors & Newsrooms Summit. The event focused on ways to build relationships and collaborations between residents and reporters.
  • Co-CEO Jessica J. González took part in a five-part webinar series at Columbia University’s Tow Center for Digital Journalism. The series explored the role that media policy can and should play in fostering vibrant and sustainable local journalism.
  • In December, Free Press launched the Media Power Collaborative under the leadership of Senior Director of Journalism Policy Mike Rispoli and Policy Fellow Sanjay Jolly. The ambitious project is bringing together media workers, movement organizers and researchers to build a shared analysis for the future of journalism. In January, the collaborative hosted a discussion featuring Sanjay, Senior Director of Strategy and Engagement Joseph Torres and allies Nan Rubin and Dr. Letrell Deshan Crittenden. The conversation focused on the history of media policy and organizing in the United States.
