A federal judge has approved a class-action settlement that requires Google to pay for collecting and storing location data from smartphone users who had attempted to keep that information private.

Intelligence and law enforcement agencies have used Section 702 to unlawfully spy on people in the United States, including protesters and sitting members of Congress.

“The [FCC] is protecting millions of hard-working families from bill shock that would force many to curtail or drop important broadband and wireless services,” said Free Press Senior Advisor S. Derek Turner.

“The bill would prevent flagrant abuses of our privacy by government authorities in league with unscrupulous third-party data brokers,” said Free Press Action’s Jenna Ruddock.

Political repression is on the rise as states find new ways to criminalize dissent and collective action.

The bill would close a legal loophole and ensure that law enforcement and intelligence agencies can’t do an end-run around the Constitution.

A quarter of the way into the most consequential election year in living memory, tech companies are failing their biggest test.

If Congress doesn’t act, in a matter of days the internet bills for one out of every six homes in the country will go up.

Without the additional money the ACP Extension Act would provide, 23 million low-income households could face higher internet bills.

“It’s a Google versus corporate media fight, and in the end California residents are the ones being harmed,” said Free Press Action’s Mike Rispoli.
