ADVISORY: Activists to Hold Rally to Save the Internet Outside Comcast Headquarters in Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA — On Sept. 15, Internet freedom supporters will gather outside Comcast headquarters to demand real protections for Net Neutrality and a rejection of Comcast's proposed merger with Time Warner Cable.
The rally, organized by Free Press, will urge the Federal Communications Commission to adopt rules that would prevent broadband providers like AT&T, Comcast and Verizon from discriminating against online content and services. The FCC’s deadline for public comments on its Internet proposal falls on the same day as the rally.
Speakers will include:
Vanessa Graber of Common Frequency
Bryan Mercer of the Media Mobilizing Project
Chris Rabb of Temple University
Hannah Sassaman of the Media Mobilizing Project
Joseph Torres of Free Press
WHAT: Rally to Save the Internet
WHEN: Mon., Sept. 15, from 12:30–1:30 p.m.
WHERE: Comcast Center, 1701 John F. Kennedy Blvd. (North 17th Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard), Philadelphia
Millions of Americans have submitted comments to the FCC on the need to preserve the open Internet and reject the Comcast merger. The flood of comments on Net Neutrality has caused the FCC’s comment website to crash on multiple occasions.
The consolidation of media power under Comcast threatens everyone’s rights to connect and communicate. Comcast’s record of Net Neutrality violations, price gouging and unfair market practices has put the cable giant at the bottom of customer-satisfaction surveys year after year.
Free Press and its allies are also holding a Sept. 15 rally outside City Hall in New York City and activists around the country will organize solidarity demonstrations in their communities.
