ST. LOUIS -- In a historic speech on Sunday, Veteran television journalist Bill Moyers upbraided Republican operatives for hijacking public broadcasting to serve a partisan agenda, issued a stinging indictment of "Beltway journalism," and announced that recent attacks "might just compel me out of the rocking chair and back into the anchor chair."

Moyers' address to the National Conference for Media Reform in St. Louis was covered by Chicago Access Network Television (CAN TV) and will be broadcast nationwide on Free Speech TV and LINK TV.

Moyers' appearance came in response to attacks on his journalistic integrity by Kenneth Tomlinson, chairman of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). Tomlinson, a staunch Republican, has launched a personal crusade aimed at "eliminating the perception of political bias" in PBS programs. He has covertly promoted right-wing programming and tried to install his political allies to CPB's board and executive offices. He even contracted an outside consultant to monitor Moyers' weekly PBS news program, "NOW with Bill Moyers," for signs of liberal bias.

Moyers' speech, which capped the three-day National Conference for Media Reform, an event convened by Free Press, will be aired on Free Speech TV on:

  • Saturday, May 21, at midnight., 5 a.m., 8 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. (EDT)
  • Sunday, May 22, at 1 a.m., 6 a.m., 1 p.m., and 10 p.m. (EDT)

Free Speech TV is seen full-time on DISH Network, channel 9415, and part-time on more than 120 local cable channels, reaching a total of approximately 25 million households. Free Speech TV also operates the www.freespeech.org Web site, which houses one of the largest archives of progressive audio and video content available on the Internet.

The speech will also be carried by LINK-TV (www.linktv.org) on:

  • Tuesday, May 24 at 11 p.m. EDT

Link TV is seen on DIRECTV (Channel 375) and the DISH Network (Channel 9410). Currently, the channel is available as a basic service in over 22.4 million U.S. homes that receive direct broadcast satellite (DBS) television.

Moyers' speech was taped by Chicago's award-winning public access center, CAN TV, which provides coverage of local events and gives every Chicagoan a voice on cable television. CAN TV's five local, noncommercial cable channels reach more than 1 million viewers in Chicago. CAN TV provides video training, facilities, equipment and channel time for Chicago residents and nonprofit groups. CAN TV's coverage of the National Conference for Media Reform was made possible through a grant from The Joyce Foundation.
