Consumers Win Major Victory as Time Warner Cable Scraps Metering Trials

WASHINGTON -- According to news reports, Time Warner Cable will shelve its excessive Internet penalty fees in all proposed test markets due to overwhelming opposition from consumers. The company is currently testing the pricing scheme in Beaumont, Texas, and had planned to launch trials Rochester, N.Y.; Austin and San Antonio, Texas; and Greensboro, N.C. More than 15,000 Free Press activists wrote Congress to protest the unfair price hikes.
Timothy Karr, campaign director of Free Press, issued the following statement:
"We're glad to see Time Warner Cable's price-gouging scheme collapse in the face of consumer opposition. Let this be a lesson to other Internet service providers looking to head down a similar path. Consumers are not going to stand idly by as companies try to squeeze their use of the Internet. This is a major victory, but the fight for a fast, open and affordable Internet is far from over."
