WASHINGTON -- On Tuesday, Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) introduced the Internet Freedom, Broadband Promotion, and Consumer Protection Act of 2011, a bill that would protect the Internet’s level playing field and prohibit anti-consumer practices online.
Senator Cantwell's bill would strengthen the weak, loophole-ridden Net Neutrality rules that the Federal Communications Commission enacted in December by establishing a clear standard against discrimination online and protecting wireless users.
Free Press Political Adviser Joel Kelsey made the following statement:
“We thank Sen.Cantwell for her leadership in protecting the free and open Internet. The Internet Freedom, Broadband Promotion, and Consumer Protection Act of 2011 would enact strong, industry-wide protections that will finally bring certainty to consumers, innovators and entrepreneurs that rely on the Internet. Senator Cantwell’s bill would fill a void where the FCC fell short in its December Net Neutrality order and benefit the public interest, not just corporate interests.”
