Justice Department Rubber Stamps AT&T Mega-Merger

WASHINGTON -- The Justice Department's Antitrust Division today signed off on the $78 billion union of AT&T and BellSouth, placing no conditions on one of the largest mergers in U.S. history. The Federal Communications Commission is scheduled to vote on the deal at a meeting on Thursday.

WASHINGTON -- Former FCC Chairman Michael Powell buried a federal study that showed media consolidation is harmful to local news reporting. The 2004 report found that locally owned stations produced five minutes more local news coverage in a half-hour newscast than their consolidated competitors.
